James Hogan | Violin | Theory | Improvisation
A violinist of 16 years, James Hogan started his violin career at three years old begging his parents to “play the thing that you play on your shoulder.” For his fourth birthday, James started private lessons with Margret Wutz who taught him using the Suzuki method. Soon after, James studied at the Western Reserve Suzuki Strings. At age seven, James continued his violin studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the Preparatory Department. At CIM, James studied theory, was part of the Veritas Quartet, participated in the orchestra, and took privately from Rebecca Ensworth. During his middle school years at Old Trail School, James studied with Amy Barlowe-Bodman, and Corey Smith.
James went to University School for high school. He held positions including concertmaster, assistant concertmaster, and principal second violin for the University School Orchestra under the baton of Mr. Martin Kessler. Seeking further orchestra development, James joined the Contemporary Youth Orchestra where he held the position of principal second violin during his senior year in high school. Throughout high school, James privately studied with Vladamir Deninzon of the Cleveland Orchestra. Deninzon provided the guidance and direction to take James to the collegiate level. James is now at Miami University, Oxford Ohio working towards obtaining a BA, Music Education with a concentration in Instrumental Education and a performers certificate in Violin under the direction of Dr. Harvey Thurmer. James plans to teach at the K-5 General Music level. He plans to become certified in the pedagogues Orff, Kodai, and Dalcroz and privately teach using the Suzuki Method.
James is teaching violin on Saturdays through the summer at GitterPicker.
